EFL Fantasy: Championship Teams with the Worst Fixtures to Start the Season

EURO 2024 is already coming to a close and English League football is just on the horizon. English sides will be hoping to start the 24/25 season well so with that in mind we take a look at the Championship teams with the worst fixtures to start the season.

Knowing the Championship teams with the worst fixtures to start the season could be crucial for fantasy managers. EFL recently announced that there would be a new fantasy game based on the Championship, League One and League Two so being prepared could be a wise move.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth blitzed their way to the League One title last season. 28 wins, just five losses and a huge 78 goals scored meant they confirmed their place in the Championship for the 24/25 season. At home they were strong but away from home they were relentless – ranking top for points taken away from home.

Portsmouth start their Championship journey with a fixture against Leeds, a side who will hoping to claim automatic promotion this season. They then go onto face title contenders Luton, play-off hopefuls Middlesbrough, Sunderland, play-off contenders West Brom, title chasers Burnley and promotion chasing Sheffield United.

Cardiff

Cardiff have been hit and miss over the years. The last time the Welsh side made the play-offs was in the 19-20 season. Last season Cardiff finished 12th in the league which was a huge improvement on their 21st place finish the season before.

Cardiff start their season against a tricky Sunderland side, then a fixture against a Burnley team expected to challenge for the title. It doesn’t get much easier after that for them as they face a local derby against rivals Swansea, Middlesbrough immediately after and Leeds straight after their game against Derby.

Preston

After gaining promotion in their 2014-2015 season from League 1 Preston have seemingly secured their position as a mid-table Championship side. That same rhetoric can be reflected in their 10th place finish last season after 18 wins, nine draws and 19 losses.

It’s going to be a challenging start to the new season for Preston as they come up against Sheffield United. Immediately after that they have a meeting with Swansea but then face another title chasing side in Luton. If that wasn’t enough they also have a battle with play-off hopefuls Middlesbrough after a clash with Oxford United.

QPR

QPR have fluctuated from bottom of the table finishes to mid-table finishes over the last several years. Last season they created panic amongst the fans by finishing just six points above the drop zone. If it wasn’t for their heroic wins towards the end of the campaign against Coventry and Leeds they could have been at serious risk of relegation.

The London based club will be hoping to improve on their 18th place finish last season but they start the new campaign with a tough fixture against West Brom. Their run of early fixtures worsen with meetings against Sheffield United and Luton immediately after.
