Team Overview

Inter Miami secured their place in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as the representative of the host nation, the United States. While Major League Soccer typically crowns its overall champion through the MLS Cup Playoffs, FIFA awarded the Club World Cup spot to the team with the best regular-season record. That honour went to Inter Miami, who won the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield by finishing top of the league with a record-breaking 74 points.

Despite being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, Inter Miami’s dominant performance throughout the season earned them the nod. FIFA recognized their consistent excellence over the full campaign as a fair basis for qualification – especially in the absence of a clear-cut rule for the host slot.

The decision sparked some debate, particularly given the star power of Lionel Messi and the commercial appeal he brings to the tournament.

Recent form has been mixed for Inter Miami. As well as sitting sixth in MLS, they have also drawn two, lost two and won two of their previous six games. During that period they netted an impressive 16 goals, but also conceded the same amount. Clean sheets were also hard to come by – keeping none in the same run.

Group and Fixtures

Joining Inter Miami in Group A are: FC Porto (POR), Al Ahly FC (EGY), and Palmeiras (BRA).

Inter Miami are set to play:

• Matchday 1 – Al Ahly
• Matchday 2 – Porto
• Matchday 3 – Palmeiras

Fortunately Inter Miami have home advantage, which could be decisive when considering their chances. An opening game against Al Ahly sees them as favourites to win.

However, Inter Miami also head into their Matchday 2 and 3 clashes as underdogs. Both Porto and Palmeiras are favourites to edge the North American side.

Inter Miami clearly have potential, especially on the opening day of the tournament, but who is going to start for them?

Top Picks

The cheapest route into Inter Miami’s back line is 39-year-old journeyman goalkeeper Óscar Ustari, who only costs €4.0 million. However, Inter Miami’s defence isn’t the best, so I wouldn’t look too hard at their defensive assets.

Chelo Weigandt (€4.3 million) and Jordi Alba (€5.1 million) have attacking potential if you’re still tempted. Alba, in particular, has lost none of his penchant for bombing forward and occasionally lines up in the left-wing position, recording three assists in MLS so far this season.

Telasco Segovia (€4.8 million) is the main offensive threat in midfield but rarely plays 90 minutes, while Sergio Busquets (€5.0 million) is responsible for dictating play from deep. The former Barcelona man may also get you the odd tackling bonus.

Miami’s forwards are where I’d focus your attention. Lionel Messi (€10.5 million) is, of course, the standout pick – he’s on penalties, free kicks and most corner kicks, and has so far managed 10 goals and five assists in MLS despite Miami’s early-season struggles.

He and Luis Suárez (€8.0 million) have lost none of the understanding they struck up during their time in Barcelona, The former Uruguayan international often drops deep to provide the final ball for Messi. However, whether Messi and Suárez are afforded the same space that has seen them thrive in MLS over the last 18 months remains to be seen.
