Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 29 Expert Picks and Team Reveal

Last modified date

We look ahead to Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 29. We bring in a regular FFC contributor and Bundesliga Fantasy expert @FPLGunnersaurus. He reveals his team and plans for the new round. He also shares the best defenders, midfielders and forwards to buy this week.

Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 29 is here so getting ready for the new round could be crucial. Our top picks and expert team reveal could be hugely significant and massive contributing factors in the decisions we have to make in our own teams this week.

Note: This article is being published before Europa League action and therefore does not take into account any injuries that may occur in Leverkusen’s match versus West Ham.

Defenders – Jeremie Frimpong (17.7m ON SALE / 63% TSB / B04)

If my maths is right Leverkusen could win their maiden Bundesliga title this weekend at home to Werder Bremen. Regardless of their Europa League exploits you would think Alonso is going to field his strongest team possible to try and get the job done early. Frimpong was rested last matchday ahead of European action but is firmly expected to resume his right wing-back role on Sunday afternoon.

Some managers may have sold the flying Dutchman last weekend as he was widely tipped to not star. If you want to bring him back now you can do so with a generous 2m saving. With eight goals and seven assists so far Frimpong probably has an eye on making those figures double-digits on both parts. Do not miss out on what I think will be another Frimpong haul.

Maximilian Mittelstädt (9.2m / 40% TSB / VFB)

Germany’s new shiny international left-back (appreciating he has been around for a while domestically) has been a thorn in my side lately. Someone remind me why I thought it was wise to remove him three weeks ago? In the three matchdays since he has averaged 12 points per game and despite a tough run of fixtures after MD29 I simply can not go without him this weekend.

Stuttgart who are battling for second place now host Die Adler and the form book says this should be a home win. Frankfurt cannot hold together a consistent run of form having not won any of their last three fixtures. Stuttgart meanwhile put their home draw with Heidenheim behind them with a huge win away at Dortmund. Mittelstädt is the sixth highest scoring defender in Bundesliga Fantasy and with a decent home game I for one am not going against the grain on this occasion.

Sepp van den Berg (5.8m ON SALE / 5% TSB / M05)

If you are looking for a form team with a budget defender look no further than Sepp van den Berg from Mainz. Even better he comes in on sale with a small 0.6m saving. Mainz are really doing what they can to avoid relegation having won two of their last three and keeping a clean sheet in each of their last three games.

The 8-1 thrashing at Bayern seems to have stirred something within Die Nullfünfer. Instrumental at the back in keeping three consecutive shut outs has been van den Berg. Mainz centre-backs may not be appealing to the casual Bundesliga Fantasy owner but three double-digit returns in a row says engaged managers should give van den Berg some consideration this matchday, especially when the Carnival club are again at home this time to Hoffenheim.

  • Alternatives – Henrichs (13.9m / 18% TSB / RBL) / Maatsen (11m / 15% TSB / BVB) / Iago (7.3m / 1% TSB / FCA).

Midfielders – Vincenzo Grifo (17.6m / 2% TSB / SCF)

When a side play the worst defence in the league you simply have to target one or two of their players.  Given that Freiburg travel to Darmstadt on MD29, who have now conceded 71 league goals, it only makes sense to bring in the man across all of their set pieces.  Also considering that 7th place could open up a route into Europe Freiburg currently just miss out on goal difference.

Freiburg will therefore be looking to inflict a heavy defeat on Die Lilien and if successful you can bet Grifo is going to be an instrumental part of that.  Despite his indifferent form this season he is still their top scorer with eight goals and top assister with seven assists.  Bringing the Italian from the Breisgau-Brasilianer is a no-brainer for this matchday and so breezes into the Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 29 top picks.

Leon Goretzka (13.9m / 4% TSB / FCB)

Wedged in-between their quarter-final UCL ties against current Premier League leaders Arsenal a home game against relegation threatened Köln is going to be a tricky affair for Bayern Munich. Tuchel has already conceded that the league title is going to Leverkusen but he nor the Bayern board will want the club to finish third. They are currently only separated from Stuttgart on goal difference so I do still see a strong team being put out on Saturday afternoon.

Given the home fixture I would be amiss not to suggest a Bayern asset this coming matchday. Outside of the usual suspects in an on sale Kane as well as Musiala I feel that Goretzka could have one of his games where he hauls. We know he can be explosive as seen by returns of 20 points on MD8 and of 29 points on MD25. Köln have been tricky customers for Bayern before but I am predicting a heavy Bayern win this time around.

Jae-sung Lee (8.8m / 0% TSB / M05)

This manager is kicking himself that he did not bring Lee in last matchday. With one free transfer left I was so close to moving from Stöger to the South Korean but ultimately decided to stick with the Austrian. Given some of the other prime fixtures out there this matchday he might not make my squad this matchday either but that is not to say he is not a good pick. In fact I would recommend him very highly with another home against the side with the worst expected goals against record away from home.

Opponents Hoffenheim are the only team expected to concede 2+ goals away from home and off the back of a 4-0 win over Darmstadt last matchday Mainz will be hungry to score some more goals and boost their goal difference which could be crucial come the end of the season. Lee scored twice and supplied one assist in that win, returning a massive 29 points in Bundesliga Fantasy. For only 8.8m Lee could be the bargain of the matchday.

  • Alternatives – Brandt (18.6m / 8% TSB / BVB) / Stöger (12.8m / 41% TSB / BOC) / Amiri (8.4m / 5% TSB / M05).

Forwards – Loïs Openda (19.8m / 44% TSB / RBL)

Having broken the 300 points barrier in Bundesliga Fantasy last matchday, where he returned 25 points with an involvement in every single goal in Leipzig’s 4-1 win over Freiburg, Openda is a man on serious fire. With 21 goals for the season so far it surprises me his ownership is only at 44% and is not at the levels of Kane and Guirassy. A home tie against Wolfsburg could see his ownership soar however. The Wolves may have won their last away game but outside of that their only other away wins have been over Köln and Darmstadt.

Openda is responsible for just shy of a third of Leipzig’s league goals. His stats prove why he is in the top three best strikers this season – a 19.78xG record, scoring every 105 minutes, 0.8 goals scored per game and firing 3.8 shots off per game. Expect him to further back up his premium price this week and for that eases his way into my Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 29 top picks.

Michael Gregoritsch (13.6m / 0% TSB / SCF)

As noted earlier with the Grifo pick Freiburg look like a team to target this matchday with your fantasy picks. Outside of Grifo it is their Austrian striker Gregoritsch who looks like the next best option. As with all Freiburg players his form has also been up an down but recently he has been scoring goals.

In the Bundesliga he has netted twice in his last four matchdays (as well as returning an assist) and in the last international break he bagged a hat trick against Turkey. At 0% ownership Gregoritsch really could be the ultimate differential if you are looking to challenge the front three golden trio of Kane, Guirassy and Openda – not that I would recommend it…

Tim Kleindienst (11.5m / 1% TSB / HDH)

Another differential to challenge the golden trio up front is a man experiencing a fruitful purple patch in front of goal. Last season’s Zweite Bundesliga top scorer Kleindienst has bagged a brace in each of his last two games, both impressive feats in themselves considering the level of opposition in Bayern Munich and Stuttgart.

On MD29 Heidenheim travel to Bochum who if not careful could find themselves dragged into the Bundesliga relegation play off spot. Heidenheim and Kleindienst will be buoyed by recent results and will fancy themselves against the home side. Can Kleindienst make it three double-digit Bundesliga Fantasy returns in a row?

  • Alternatives – Füllkrug (17.6m / 5% TSB / BVB) / Demirović (13.2m / 3% TSB / FCA) / Burkardt (5.2m / 2% TSB / M05).
