Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 2 Top Picks
The new season of German League football continues so we take a look at the Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 2 top picks. Bundesliga Fantasy expert and regular contributor @FPLGunnersaurus reveals three of the best defenders, midfielders and forwards for the second round.
The Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 2 top picks can be extremely useful for managers. With lots of changes to the game this season it could be difficult to adjust for managers. But the following top picks can help you bring clarity to some of the decisions you have to make ahead of the deadline.
Note: Remember there is an international break after this matchday so managers will be able to make unlimited transfers ahead of MD3. With that in mind managers can make their transfers for MD2 based off of the MD2 fixtures alone. Target those good games!
Defenders – Alejandro Grimaldo (20m / 21% TSB / B04)
He may come in expensive at 20m but for Grimaldo to only be owned by only 21% of Bundesliga Fantasy managers is crazy. Despite no attacking returns and conceding twice he scored 239pts last round, the 9th overall best defender. One area I expected better from him was defensively as against Gladbach I thought he may have needed to do a bit more work there.
On MD2 Die Werkself host RB Leipzig in what should be a close affair. Despite being up against stronger opposition I expect the Euro winner to return better than last week. In fact I expect him to do better in every area he can score points for and that is why once more he will also be my star defender. Because of this Grimaldo breezes into my Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 2 Top Picks.
Nico Schlotterbeck (14m / 16% TSB / BVB)
In my mind the Dortmund and German international centre back is going to be a game breaker this season. Valued at 14m too I expect his ownership to soar exponentially once managers clock on to the hauls he will inevitably bring in. It might have been a home tie but Nico won a whopping 19 duels (second to only Wolfsburg’s Tomás) which alone netted him 228pts. He returned two goal attempts too and made 79 successful passes.
Away to Werder Bremen on MD2 Schlotterbeck should be busier, especially coming up against Weiser coming down his side of the pitch. If you thought 387pts last matchday was good then watch out for an even bigger score this time around potentially.
Lars Ritzka (5m / 2% TSB / STP)
My budget pick this week comes from the Kiezkicker in St. Pauli’s Ritzka. The German left-back fared well in his 76 minutes on the pitch on MD1 raking in a total of 271pts. Like Schlotterbeck he was a duel machine having won 16 duels for which he picked up a huge 192pts. This goes to show you that with the new scoring system even in defeat players can return well – as long as they do not get thrashed of course.
With a couple of shots taken Ritzka also has some attacking prowess which will boost his chances to pick up points. St. Pauli travel to Union Berlin on MD2. I am unsure what to make of Union Berlin still despite staving off relegation. It may take some time for former Mainz boss Bo Svensson to get them playing how he wants. I would not be shocked to see the visitors pick up the first win of their season here which bodes well for Ritzka.
- Alternatives – Mittelstädt (17m / 9% TSB / VFB) / Gosens (13m / 2% TSB / FCU) / Mainka (8m / 6% TSB / HDH).
Midfielders – Jamal Musiala (20m / 27% TSB / FCB)
In the battle of whether I should own Musiala or Wirtz for MD2 I have gone with the Bayern man, purely down to the easier fixture home against Freiburg. After a stop-start season for Bambi last year he shone at the European Championships and carried that form over into his first Bundesliga game of the season.
Despite scoring one of the most impressive things about Musiala was the duels that he won which equated to a third of his total 337pts scored. He only had three goal attempts too and we know he can fire off many more shots than that in a single game. Bayern despite overcoming a scare against Wolfsburg last time out will look to lay down a marker here and that is why Musiala is locked for me and will take up the star midfielder mantle too.
Kevin Stöger (15m / 3% TSB / BMG)
Despite a change in clubs it was business as normal for Gladbach’s new CAM. Stöger in defeat still managed to run the show for the Foals when they had anything good going, as evidenced by the assist he picked up for Kleindienst’s goal. A return of 251pts was good but we all know we can expect to see some bigger hauls from him this season, one of which might come next on MD2.
Gladbach actually travel to Stöger’s former team Bochum on MD2. In the past I would have tipped Bochum to win this tie but that was when it was they who had Stöger in their ranks. With him switching allegiances I tip a Gladbach win and we will see Stöger reminding the Bochum fans exactly what they will miss for the rest of the upcoming campaign.
Lovro Majer (11m / 1% TSB / WOB)
At the slightly cheaper end of things one player I can see returning well once more this matchday is Wolfsburg’s Croatian star Majer. In defeat against Bayern in MD1 Majer netted twice which of course comes with benefits in the fantasy game, picking up additional points for the brace. Wolfsburg going forward did look good with ten shots against Bayern to show for it.
On MD2 the Wolves travel to newly promoted Bundesliga debutants Holstein Kiel. Keil did actually look really good despite the Hoffenheim loss but again I think they will come up short once more. This could be a breakout season for Majer and I tip him again to return well on MD2.
- Alternatives – Wirtz (20m / 34% TSB / B04) / Führich (14m / 7% TSB / VFB) / Wanner (8m / 9% TSB / HDH).
Forwards – Harry Kane (20m / 45% TSB / FCB)
Who else but the England captain to top the bill here? The obvious star forward choice may not have been the goalscoring machine we know him to be at the Euros but at home against Freiburg is there really any other choice? He may have looked out of sorts still against Wolfsburg on MD2 having only registered an assist (and having only taken two shots) but there is no way I can be one of the 55% who do not currently own him.
Kane looked to be on track to break the Bundesliga scoring record last season but still settled for the golden boot with just the 36 goals. Opponents Freiburg are under new management in the post-Streich era and whilst they impressed in a home win over Stuttgart an away game against the big boys of Bavaria is an entirely different ask. With the above in mind Kane is an easy addition amongst the Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 2 Top Picks.
Ermedin Demirović (12m / 7% TSB / VFB)
I will surely own one of the Stuttgart forwards for their MD2 home tie against Mainz but the question is who? Given that is he 1m cheaper than Undav and came off early in their 5-0 DFB Pokal midweek win many will go for the Bosnia and Herzegovinian international Demirović.
The shoes of the Guinean goal machine Guirassy are big boots to fill but it was an impressive 23-24 season with Augsburg scoring 15 times which earned him his move to the Champions League side. At home last season Stuttgart were absolutely dominant. Let us see how they and Demirović bounce back from their MD1 loss.
Maximillian Breunig (1m / 16% TSB / HDH)
Despite a very impressive pre-season for the 24 year old which saw him net a hat trick in the DFB Pokal it is fair to say Breunig flopped in Heidenheim’s 2-0 away win over St. Pauli. Still at only 1m he is a total non-brainer to sit on the bench or to form part of your forward trio if looking to place budget into another position.
Heidenheim host Augsburg on MD2 and whilst it was the visitors that won both games last season that was with the aforementioned Demirović. If we are being real here any returns from Breunig are a bonus for a 1m player who will likely play back up on our bench.
- Alternatives – Gnabry (13m / 2% TSB / FCB) / Undav (13m / 13% TSB / VFB) / Kleindienst (12m / 3% TSB / BMG).
