Note
This is the final round of matches before the long winter break, with the Bundesliga not resuming action again until Friday 12th January 2024 where Bayern host Hoffenheim. Don’t worry about long term planning this matchday and go for broke with one week picks and on-sale players to boost your budget ahead of 2024.
Top picks – Defenders – Jeremie Frimpong (17.9m / 71% TSB / B04)
The most expensive defender in the game continues to rise and for good reason. The Dutch full-back hit 200 points for the season after picking up 17 points in a 3-0 home win on MD15 over Frankfurt. Frimpong scored in that victory making that six goals for him so far to go along with his five assists.
Eleven attacking returns for a defender not even half way through the season is an incredible return. Leverkusen host Bochum on MD16 and I expect both of their full-backs to run riot down the wings on Wednesday night.
Nico Schlotterbeck (11.2m / 5% TSB / BVB)
When Nico Schlotterbeck came in with a mid-price valuation at the start of the season I was very excited at the prospect of owning him. Prior to his injury last season the centre-back was a consistent source of fantasy points and often picked up double-digit returns.
Like his club though form has been hard to come by this season however revenge on MD16 may spur Dortmund on. That’s because they host Mainz in a repeat of the final game of last season, a game which cost them the league title. All four of his double-digit returns have come at home this season and he could be a nice punt for MD16.
Patrick Mainka (4m / 11% TSB / HDH)
My cheap defender of choice for MD16 is Heidenheim’s Patrick Mainka and that isn’t just because of his exploits in his last home game. I’ll mention that anyway because this pick is being made on the basis for his attacking prowess, particularly at home.
He returned 25 points and scored twice on MD14 but you could sense a goal was coming after he picked up four points for goal attempts in each of his two games prior. Heidenheim host Freiburg who haven’t been known for their free scoring form this season either, so chances are there could be a home clean sheet up for grabs too.
Midfielders – Florian Wirtz (17.7m / 51% TSB / B04)
The premium midfield asset to target for MD16 simply has to be the German wonderkid that is Florian Wirtz – this despite teammate Hofmann being on sale for 16.2m. Wirtz is having a sensational season for Die Werkself in what has been an invincible season so far.
Wirtz picked up a huge 21 points on MD15 in a 3-0 win over Frankfurt registering both a goal and an assist. Leverkusen, at home again, host Bochum on MD16 who feature in the top five (or worst five depending on how you look at it) for expected goals against. He’ll likely be the star midfielder of choice for many and with such high ownership not doing that yourself may have ramifications for your rank.
Chris Führich (11.4m / 25% TSB / VFB)
A slightly expensive mid-price option for your midfield this matchday but one who can justify the investment. The German international looks to continue his impressive season, especially at home, in a MD16 fixture against Augsburg.
96 points of his 129 points total have come at the MHPArena and that makes me think when Stuttgart are hosting, especially against a ‘weaker’ team, that Führich is almost an essential pick. Augsburg are looking good though under Jess Thorup and have been hard to break down as of late. That said however with Führich and another player to be mentioned later on Stuttgart should pick up the MD16 victory.
Merlin Röhl (3.1m / 1% TSB / SCF)
At the bargain basement end of the midfield picks we have a Freiburg youngster on a roll in Merlin Röhl. After featuring as a sub for the first eight games of the season Röhl has earned his place in Christian Streich’s starting XI. He has fully taken his chance too with a goal and a couple of assists since.
In the fantasy game though he has picked up three double-digit returns in his last six games and shone in their 2-0 win over Köln, picking up 19 points which included 12 points for goal attempts alone. Freiburg travel to Heidenheim on MD16 in a game that could go either way in my mind. If Freiburg pick up the win though I back Röhl to return well.
Forwards – Victor Boniface (16.3m / 54% TSB / B04)
At the top end of the forward picks is someone Leverkusen are going to have to do without shortly. Boniface will be off to AFCON with Nigeria and depending on how his country progress he may miss some games after the Bundesliga winter break. For now though he carries on spearheading Leverkusen’s title charge.
Boniface scored on MD15 in a 13 points fantasy return ensuring his club will top the table at Christmas this year. That’s now nine goals and seven assists for the Nigerian, not bad for a debut season in a new league. Against Bochum you would expect Boniface to keep Riemann in the Bochum goal very busy.
Andrej Kramarić (13.9m / 0% TSB / TSG)
A few weeks ago I told someone I didn’t think Kramarić was a good option in a home game against Bochum. He then went on to score in a 3-1 win and picked up 13 points in the fantasy game. That was only his fifth goal of his Bundesliga game but against proverbial whipping boys Darmstadt he’ll be looking to add to his tally.
Darmstadt accounted well for themselves on MD15 in a 1-0 loss against Wolfsburg but that goal conceded was their 38th this season, five clear of the next worst team. Hoffenheim and Kramarić will be looking to head into the winter break with a comfortable win over the side bottom of the Bundesliga table.
Deniz Undav (10.3m / 8% TSB / VFB)
Not cheap by any means but the cheapest of all the strikers with a good chance at returning in the final game before the winter break. Undav hugely benefitted from Guirassy’s earlier injury and effectively forced the manager’s hand into changing to a 4-4-2 formation.
Undav has eight goals and two assists to his name this season and his parent club Brighton may be looking to see if they inserted a clause into his loan deal to bring him back in January, such is his good form. Stuttgart should be heading into the winter break with another win under their sails and consolidating their third place position.
