Taking a look back at the head-to-head data to find some of the best players for FPL Gameweek 8 could be really helpful to managers. Picking out assets who have great records against their upcoming opponent can help with transfers, captaincy and even chip strategy.
James Maddison v Luton
Tottenham are in fantastic scoring form so far this season. In fact they are averaging more than 2.5 goals scored per game. They come up against a poor Luton side next and one their of players in particular does very well against promoted teams.
James Maddison (£7.9m) has already managed four returns this season but that could extend this week based on the graphic below. In the nine matches Maddison played against promoted sides between 2020-2021 he bagged seven returns. He also picked up a huge 30 points against them last season due to his three goals and two assists.
Son Heung-min v Luton
As you can see we stay with Tottenham and they have another asset who could go big against Luton this week. Since playing in a strikers role Son (£9.3m) has collected a whopping 43 FPL points and judging on his record below record he could continue that form.
In the 16 matches Son played against promoted clubs between 2019-2021 he banked a return in an impressive 12 of them – those returns included six double-digit returns. Son also banked 30 points against promoted teams last season as well with the help of two goals and one assist.
Mohamed Salah v Brighton
Liverpool are another side in top scoring form. What is interesting is that the Reds face Brighton next whom have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their matches so far this campaign. With that in mind it could be a great week for a player who has returned in all but one of his matches, Mohamed Salah (£12.6m).
The Egyptian has been very consistent this season but he also has a very good record against his upcoming opponents. In the 10 matches Salah played against Brighton between 2017-2021 he managed a massive eight returns.
Raheem Sterling v Burnley
Chelsea will be hoping to continue their success against poor defences as they face Burnley next. Burnley are struggling in terms of form but they are also conceding over two goals per game on average which could indicate they are a team to target.
As we can see one Chelsea player had a very good record against promoted sides when playing for Manchester City. In fact, in the 11 matches Sterling played against them he bagged a return in nine of his games. For Chelsea last season Sterling continued his great run against promoted sides – collecting 35 points due to his three goals and two assists.
