Best Matchdays to Use the Chips in UCL Fantasy
Champions League Football isn’t far from it’s return so we take a look at the best Matchdays to use the chips in UCL Fantasy. To do this we brought in Fantasy Football whizz @FPLReaction. He talks through when he would prefer to use the Limitless and the Wildcard.
Knowing when the best times to use the chips in UCL Fantasy are can be crucial towards your end of season success. The chips are provided to UCL Fantasy managers to give a much needed boost, but also to add an element of planning to your season. So let’s get started.
Matchday 3

The upcoming round could be a very good opportunity to use a chip. Limitless stands out to me massively given the schedule. What is concerning this week, is that along with injuries and bans, we also have a lot of big teams facing other big teams. So, avoiding the following fixtures could be reason enough alone to hit the Limitless:
- Bayern v Barcelona
- Dortmund v Real Madrid
- Leipzig v Liverpool
At the time of writing there are lots of players with high ownership playing in those games. Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Pau Cubarsi are amongst the names.
Using the Limitless isn’t just a good idea due to the above though. We can also invest in teams who have very enticing fixtures this week, they include:
- Manchester City v Sparta Praha
- Aston Villa v Bologna
- Milan v Club Brugge
- Atalanta v Celtic
- Inter v Young Boys
- Leverkusen v Brest
- Arsenal v Shakhtar
Using the Limitless also means your previous team returning. This may sound off putting but in Matchday 4 Bayern face Benfica, Dortmund play Sturm Graz, Milan play Real Madrid, Arsenal face Inter, Liverpool face Leverkusen and Barcelona come up against Crvena Zvezda. So, you’ll get most of the players you want back and get rid of most of the player you won’t want back.
I think there is also warrant in using the Wildcard if needed. Wildcard users could reshape their squad whilst targeting the fixtures mentioned above. My only issue with the wildcard is that you would either have to book in transfers or include players you may not want for the next round.
Matchday 5
Matchday 5 could be another good opportunity to use the chips. The Limitless wouldn’t be a bad shout and there are plenty of fixtures you could avoid:
- Real Madrid v Liverpool
- Bayern v PSG
- Juventus v Aston Villa
- Sporting v Arsenal
You can also target the following fixtures:
- Manchester City v Feynoord
- Milan v Slovan Bratislava
- Dortmund v GNK Dinamo
- Atalanta v Young Boys
- Barcelona v Brest
- Leverkusen v Salzburg
But, I think I prefer the Wildcard at this point. Using the Wildcard before Matchday 5 allows lots of different benefits:
- Coming away from Aston Villa as their fixtures turn poor.
- Targeting Milan assets who come into a great schedule.
- Piling into Arsenal players after their tough clash with Inter but for good fixtures ahead.
- Moving off Sporting assets as they come up against Arsenal.
Matchday 6
Personally this is my favourite Matchday to use the Wildcard. Usually I would use chips early on. But, this time around it felt easy to build a long-term team that I liked.
Matchday 6 sees huge fixture swings and ultimately I think it could be the best time to change up your squad. Using the Wildcard in Matchday 6 allows you to:
- Potentially come off Manchester City as they clash with Juventus and PSG.
- Potentially remove Aston Villa players with tricky games ahead.
- Buy into Milan who have great fixtures.
- Invest in Arsenal who have a great end of League Phase schedule.
- Go heavy on Liverpool immediately after their tough match with Leverksuen.
- Take advantage of Bayern’s fantastic run of fixtures.
- Potentially come off Leverkusen assets against Inter and Atleti.
- Consider differentials from teams like Celtic, PSV, Sporting and Stuttgart.
Using the Limitless chip is also an option in Matchday 6 as you can avoid Manchester City v Juventus, Aston Villa v Leipzig, Real Madrid v Atalanta, Dortmund v Barcelona and Inter v Leverkusen, whilst also targeting players from Milan v Crvena Zvezda, Arsenal v Monaco, Bayern v Shakhtar, Liverpool v Brestand several others.
Matchday 8
Matchday 8 is probably one of the best rounds to use a chip. I say this because:
- All games kick-off at the same time. This means that we will have full access to every single line-up ahead of the deadline.
- Predicting who will start is going to be very difficult. By then many of the top teams would have already advanced to the next stage so playing all of your chips before Matchday 8 could leave you with a team full of non-starters whilst chip users can field a full XI.
- It isn’t just making sure you have a starting XI that is going to be difficult. Chip users will have the power to put all of their budget into the starting XI, whilst non chip users have money laying on their bench. This would help chip users fit in better players.
- Fielding a starting XI will almost certainly gain you rank due to non chip users being short of personnel. So, combine that with a starting XI who perform well, and you could make mammoth gains.
Based in the above and the fact I think the Wildcard is the most powerful chip and should be used for multiple rounds, I think using the Limitless in Matchday 8 could be the best play.
The Best Chip Strategies
There may not be a specific route when it comes to the best Matchdays to use the chips in UCL Fantasy. But, my favourite strategy remains using the Wildcard ahead of Matchday 6 and then using the Limitless for Matchday 8.
However, I also see value in using a chip ahead of Matchday 3 and for Matchday 8. But, of course, like with every game, it could be team dependent.
