Best Captain for Gameweek 35

The new round of Fantasy Premier League is approaching so we take a look at the candidates and pick out the best captain for Gameweek 35. To do this we use some of the fantastic tools in the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area.

As we approach the latter stages of the competition picking the right captain will be absolutely crucial for rank and mini-league position. As tempting as it is to go against the crowd, giving the armband to the player with the most factors backing them tends to be the best option. So, lets take a look at who we should consider this week.

Gameweek 35 Fixtures

The Options – Cole Palmer

Chelsea are one of two teams with a double Gameweek ahead. The Blues however have been in mixed form after winning three, drawing two and losing one of their last six matches. Offensively Chelsea have scored a huge 17 goals in the same period. In addition, during that same period they also rank first for goals and joint second best for big chances total.

Aston Villa and Tottenham lay ahead for Chelsea, presenting two opportunities to pick up returns. Aston Villa, although impressive this season overall, they rank amongst the worst five teams for big chances conceded and total shots in the box conceded in the last six Gameweeks. Meanwhile Tottenham have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last five league matches.

There’s potential ahead for a Chelsea attacker and Cole Palmer (£6.2m) is clear of his teammates. When it comes to his recent form Palmer has racked up a huge 10 goals and three assists in the last six league matches. That fantastic form is backed up by the fact he ranks third for total attempts on goal, fourth best for total shots in the box and joint first for big chances total in the last six matches.

Son Heung-Min

Tottenham are the other team who pay twice this week. Their form has also been mixed – winning three, losing two and drawing one of their last six matches. Tottenham hit 10 goals in the same period whilst ranking amongst the worst eight teams for most underlying attacking metric.

Arsenal and Chelsea lay ahead next up for Tottenham. Arsenal have maintained one of the best defences in the league this season in terms of both clean sheets and goals conceded. Chelsea however have been poor – shipping 14 goals in their last six matches.

The standout attacker and Tottenham penalty taker is Son Heung-Min (£9.8m). Although some have questioned his output recently, Son still managed to collect two goals and three assists in his last six league games. The data in that same period shows that Son sits outside the top 10 players for most attacking metrics.

Alexander Isak

Newcastle have been in similar form to the other two sides mentioned. The Magpies won three, lost two and drew one of their last six league matches. With 12 goals scored in the same period Newcastle also sit as the fourth best side in the league for big chances total.

Most of the Newcastle appeal comes from the fact that they face Sheffield United at home this week, a venue they perform much better at and against a side who continue to ship plenty of goals. Overall, the Blades rank as rock bottom for most underlying defensive data.

Leading the Newcastle attack this week is of course Alexander Isak (£8.1m). His recent form shows six goals and one assist in his last six Premier League games. Statistically during that time he also ranks fourth best for non-penalty expected goal involvement and joint first for big chances total when compared to all players.

Who is the best captain for Gameweek 35?

As tempting as Alexander Isak is this week against Sheffield United, the fact he plays just one fixture means our other two options have the edge.

Son Heung-Min could also be a fantastic option for the armband. However, his recent underlying data is hugely questionable going into a Gameweek facing Arsenal and Chelsea.

The best captain for Gameweek 35 is of course Cole Palmer. Palmer has been exceptional recently, both in terms of output and underlying attacking data. So, it could be an easy decision this week. However, if Palmer has not recovered from his illness, the next bet option is Son.
