Best Captain for Gameweek 29

The new round of Fantasy Premier League is approaching so we take a look at the candidates and pick out the best captain for Gameweek 29. To do this we use some of the fantastic tools in the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area.

Knowing who the best captain for Gameweek 29 is can be huge factor towards the success you have this week. This week managers have a huge Blank Gameweek to navigate and with less options it could be difficult to pick a captain out, but we help with that here.

Gameweek 29 Fixtures

The Options – Ivan Toney

Brentford sit at the top of the fixture ticker this week. It has been a tough few weeks for the Bees after winning one, drawing one and losing four of their last six matches. In the same period offensively they also rank amongst the worst eight teams for most attacking metrics like shots on target, total attempts and more. However, Brentford also rank in the best six teams for big chances total in the last six matches.

Most of Brentford’ appeal comes from their upcoming opposition, Burnley. The promoted side sit 19th in the league due to a torrid campaign. More recently, in the last six matches they have drawn twice and lost four times. Defensively things have also been tough for Burnley – conceding a huge 17 goals and ranking in the worst four teams for goals conceded in the same six-match period.

Spearheading the Brentford frontline is Ivan Toney (£8.1m). Since returning from his long-term ban his output has been hit and miss – returning in four of his nine matches played. Statistically, when compared to every other attacker in the last six the only attacking metric Toney broke into the top 10 players in was total attempts on goal. We also have to factor in that Toney takes penalties and set pieces for his side.

Son Heung-Min

Tottenham are another side we should consider for captaincy this week. Chasing Champions League qualification this season Spurs have won four of their last six matches, losing one, drawing one and scoring 15 goals in the meantime. What is interesting however is that in the same period they also sit between mid-table and bottom for key metrics like expected goals, shots in the box and shots on target.

In terms of their opposition Tottenham travel to fellow London based club Fulham next up. It has been hit and miss for the Cottagers in their last six – losing two, winning three and drawing one. During those same six matches they also conceded seven goals and ranked around mid-table for key defensive stats.

One player who has returned from the Asia Cip with a bang is Son Heung-Min (£9.9m). In fact, since returning four Gameweeks ago the South Korean has scored two goals and created three assists. When focusing on the data Son doesn’t appear amongst the top 10 players for any key attacking metrics other than the fact he ranks first for big chances created. It is worth mentioning that although categorised as a midfielder Son has been playing in a strikers role. He also remains on penalty duty which is another factor.

Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa come into Gameweek 29 looking to bounce back after their recent loss to Tottenham. Prior to that game they had won four out of their five matches. Overall, in their last six matches they netted a huge 15 goals. During that time they also sit joint second best for goals, joint second best for big chances total, and in the best six teams for total shots in the box and total shots on goal.

West Ham lay ahead this week who have been in mixed form in the last six matches – losing three, winning two and drawing one. When focusing on their defensive data during that period they conceded a huge 16 goals and rank third worst for shots on target conceded and amongst the worst eight sides for other key metrics.

Leading the Aston Villa attack is of course Ollie Watkins (£9m). In his last six matches no player has managed more attacking returns in the entire league. He also sits fourth best for non-penalty expected goal involvement, second best for big chances total and amongst the top eight players for other key attacking metrics.

Who is the best captain for Gameweek 29?

Ivan Toney is great option this week, leading the line and taking penalties against one of the worst teams in the league. However, both his and his recent sides form is a slight concern in terms of goals which therefore makes the other two picks safer options.

Ollie Watkins is also a very good option. The Aston Villa striker is maintaining some fantastic data and sits above every other player in the league for points which reflects how consistent he has been this season.

However, the best captain for Gameweek 29 is Son Heung-Min. Unlike Watkins, Son takes his sides penalties and plays out of position and the latter gives him extra points for goals scored and a clean sheet kept. Son isn’t just in great form but he also has one of the best shots to goal ratios in Europe which suggests he doesn’t need as many opportunities to score as other players.
