Goalkeepers
Chelsea have managed two clean sheets in their first two matches – continuing their good defensive form from the Club World Cup. With this in mind, Robert Sanchez (£5m) remains a great option.
Burnley’ Martin Dubravka (£4m) is still the cheapest playing goalkeeper in the game, so he could be a shoo-in on the bench.
Defenders
After dominating underlying defensive last season and keeping two clean sheets already this season, it could be time to invest in the Arsenal backline. Their standout option due to reliability of minutes and attacking threat is Gabriel (£6.1m).
Crystal Palace are another side who have proven themselves in terms of clean sheets – keeping two in their first three. Wing-back Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) impressed offensively last season and he has already bagged an assist in his first three games.
Liverpool have great fixtures long-term and their safest option for gametime is Virgil Van Dijk (£6m). The Dutchman also ranks among the best three defenders in terms of defensive contributions so far this campaign.
On the bench and likely to prove good value for money long-term is Tottenham centre-back Mickey van de Ven (£4.6m) and Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi (£4.6m).
Midfielders
Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) may not have passed the eye test for many FPL managers, but he keeps on returning. It may be a matter of time before he starts recapturing his electric output from last season.
The lack of appeal from the mid-priced midfielders contributes to Antoine Semenyo‘ (£7.4m) appeal. The Ghanian has already produced two goals and one assist in his first three matches and the Bournemouth fixtures look favourable long-term.
Another Ghanian who appeals long-term is Mohammed Kudus (£6.7m). Tottenham have started the season convincingly outside of their loss to Bournemouth, and Kudus has been one of their most impactful attackers.
There are plenty of cheap options available to FPL managers. One of them is Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m). The Brazilian has netted in his last three matches, and West Ham have shown they are more than capable of scoring goals.
Another side who have impressed this season from an attacking perspective is Everton. The Toffees have several great options to pick from, but the cheapest is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5m), who has already bagged a goal and an assist.
Forwards
Strikers seems to be coming into the fold a lot more lately in terms of output. Jean Philippe Mateta (£7.5m) is one of many who could be great long-term picks. The Frenchman takes penalties and leads the effective Crystal Palace attack.
Arsenal will be hoping to challenge for the title this season after fantastic summer investment. Viktor Gyokeres (£9m) is one of their new additions, and has already made his mark – scoring two goals in his first three outings.
Chelsea rank among the best sides in the league early on for underlying attacking metrics. Helping them achieve that was Joao Pedro (£7.7m) who has two goals and two assists to his name already this season.
