FPL Position Changes for the 2025/26 Season

FPL position changes for the 2025/26 season are already shaking up draft strategies, with several key players reclassified based on their real-life roles.

Whether it’s a winger turned forward or a full-back now listed as a midfielder, these updates could open up new opportunities- or close off old favourites. In this article, we’ll run through the biggest changes, highlight the most impactful reclassifications, and break down what it means for your squad building this year.

Ahead of the new Fantasy Premier League season, several notable players have seen their positions updated to better reflect their roles on the pitch. A total of 11 players have been reclassified for the 2025/26 campaign, including familiar FPL names like Matheus Cunha, Omar Marmoush, and Jarrod Bowen.

Here’s a breakdown of the changes:

Matheus Cunha (Manchester United) – Forward ➝ Midfielder

Cunha switches to a midfield role after moving to Manchester United from Wolves over the summer. Under Ruben Amorim’s likely 3-4-2-1 system, he’s expected to play behind the striker, just as he did at Molineux.

Cunha enjoyed his best FPL season last year with 15 goals and eight assists, totalling 178 points. If he also takes over some set-piece duties, he could rival Bruno Fernandes as United’s top fantasy option.

Omar Marmoush (Manchester City) – Forward ➝ Midfielder

Marmoush shifts to midfield after impressing in an advanced playmaker role following his arrival at City in Gameweek 23.

The Egyptian bagged seven goals in his 16 Premier League starts, and he is expected to make an even bigger impact in the new season.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United) – Midfielder ➝ Forward

Bowen moves into the forward category after playing up front in Graham Potter’s 3-5-2 system last season.

Bowen was the fourth highest scoring midfielder in the game last season with 13 goals and 11 assists. FPL managers could be disheartened by the position change in the new campaign ahead.

Cody Gakpo (Liverpool) – Forward ➝ Midfielder

Gakpo now classifies as a midfielder after spending much of last season operating on the left side of Liverpool’s front three. His new classification could boost his value if he continues to get forward and contribute regularly.

The Dutchman was in and out of the starting line-ups last season for Liverpool – but still collected a cool 10 goals and four assists.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal) – Midfielder ➝ Defender

Arsenal youngster Lewis-Skelly now appears in the game as a defender, reflecting his deeper role when he featured last season.

These changes will have a big impact on FPL draft strategy. Players like Cunha and Gakpo may now benefit from clean sheet points and the extra scoring rules for midfielders, while reclassified defenders like Nunes or Rodrigo Gomes might open up value picks in deeper positions.

Make sure to factor these updates into your pre-season planning.
