Best Captains for UCL Fantasy Matchday 16

Last modified date

Confusion around captaincy is a common thing in fantasy football, and many are unsure who to give the armband. Here, we take a look at the options and pick out the best captains for UCL Fantasy Matchday 16

This week UCL Fantasy managers can captain a player on Tuesday, then change on Wednesday if they aren’t happy. Let’s take a look at the options.

Tuesday 6th May

The only game playing on Tuesday 6th May is of course Inter v Barcelona. This means UCL Fantasy managers have to choose a player to captain from this match. Although playing away from home, Barcelona appear to be the standout in that regards.

Barcelona have maintained an excellent average of 3.1 goals per game this season in the Champions League, and they displayed that average in their most recent clash with Inter. On Inter, they have conceded 2-3 goals in two of their previous five matches, which means they are still a prime target.

The most effective route into the Barcelona attack this week is without a doubt Raphinha (€7.9m). The covering penalty taker and set piece handler has amassed a whopping 12 goals and eight assists in just 13 Champions League matches. Raphinha is the best captain on Tuesday, but who else could managers opt for?

Tuesday Differentials

There are plenty of alternatives on Tuesday for those who want to avoid the heavily owned Raphinha. Another great option for the armband is fellow midfielder and teammate Lamine Yamal (€7.4m). The 17-year-old has put in some jaw-dropping performances in the latter stages of major tournaments, and one of them came in the first leg where he scored.

Yamal may be differential when compared to Raphinha, but he is still heavily owned. For those that want to chase a player with more upside look at midfielder Ferran Torres (€6.7m). The Spaniard has successfully replaced the injured Robert Lewandowski up front – scoring against Inter in Matchday 15.

UCL Fantasy managers may even want to back home advantage for Inter assets. Their best attacker is arguably Marcus Thuram (€7.6m), especially with Lautaro Martinez out due to injury. Thuram is very effective on the counter-attack, something he showed with his goal in Matchday 15.

Wednesday 7th May

Wednesday is far more awkward for captaincy. A lot of it may depend on the injury status of PSG midfielder Ousmane Dembele (€8.6m). The fact he missed training recently isn’t a good sign at all. Taking that into account, shifting our attention to Arsenal could be wise.

PSG may have the impetus at home, but they have shown time and time again that they can struggle defensively. The French side kept just seven clean sheets during their Ligue 1 title win, which is extremely poor.

If anyone is going to turn the tide of the tie in Arsenal’ favour this week, it’s likely going to be Midfielder Bukayo Saka (€9m). With seven attacking returns in eight Champions League matches, Saka has proven to be one of the most efficient assets in UCL Fantasy.

If Dembele is cleared for the game, then he could well challenge Saka for the captaincy armband, but if not, then the next best option may be PSG midfielder Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (€7.6m). The Georgian seems to be key for the PSG frontline and recent returns against both Arsenal and Aston Villa reflect that. Kvaratskhelia also has the ability to pick up the player of the match award, adding even more appeal.

After Kvaratskhelia, the options get less and less convincing, especially for captaincy. However, those chasing high upside could go for PSG defender Achraf Hakimi (€5.7m). As well as clean sheet potential the Moroccan has mustered up 15+ goal contributions in all competitions this season.

Some could even go for another Arsenal attacker, the likes of midfielders Leandro Trossard (€6.9m) and Mikel Merino (€7m) come to mind. Both players have shown major attacking potential over the previous weeks.
