What is the Challenge this week?
The Challenge for Gameweek 14 is ‘Red Hot Deal?’
Manchester United players earn double points this week.
Challengers have to select 11 players with a budget of just £75m.
Manchester United Focus
The Gameweek 14 Challenge sees Manchester United players earn double points. The biggest issue with that is the fact they face Arsenal away from home, one of the most difficult fixtures in any sides schedule. The Gooners may have recently suffered a four-game winless run, but Mikel Arteta’ men seem to have put that behind them now, after consecutive wins in the last two rounds.
They have also impressed in regards to their basic stats. In fact, as well as keeping four clean sheets and sitting joint third best for total goals conceded (14), at the time of writing, Arsenal have also scored the joint second most amount of goals thus far (26).
Taking all of that into account, and Manchester United’ defensive and offensive inconsistencies this season, Challengers may feel underwhelmed or put off, when it comes to selecting Manchester United assets.
However, it isn’t all doom and gloom for the Reds. New manager Ruben Amorim could well turn things around and add a much needed spark to a lacklustre side, his latest 4-0 win over Everton could be what ignites that. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of their best assets.
Manchester United Top Picks
Starting between the sticks, the chances of Andre Onana (€5.2m) keeping a clean sheet this week could be very difficult. However, we can’t underestimate the fact that he has helped his side keep the second most clean sheets so far (six).
The Cameroonian has also proven himself as a top shot-stopper – ranking above every other goalkeeper in the league for expected goals (XG) prevented (+4.70). This suggests that Onana has the potential to rack up save points.
Two defenders stand out for Manchester United. The first of them, and arguably the better pick, is full-back (turned wing-back in Amorim’ back three system) Diogo Dalot (£5.2m). Dalot leads all of his defensive teammates so far this season for non-penalty expected goal involvement (1.83). This takes into account both creativity and goal threat, which also shows he has attacking potential.
Another Manchester United defender we should consider is centre-back Matthijis de Ligt (£5m). The Dutchman has already found the net this season, and is the only Manchester United defender to do so.
In midfield, it’s unclear who will benefit the most from Amorim’ influence. However, based on his underlying data and penalty taking duty, Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m) could be the best of the bunch. None of his attacking teammates can better him for total attacking returns produced (seven) or minutes played (1083), which are two of the most important statistics when selecting a player.
It isn’t just his basic stats which propel him above other picks either. In fact, his underlying data, when compared with all other players in the league, is also impressive. When trudging through the data, he ranks just outside the top 10 for total chances created (27), and inside the top 10 for big chances created (nine).
Challengers could also consider Marcus Rashford (£6.9m). As well as showing huge potential historically, Rashford has also scored three times in this previous two matches, under the helm of Amorim.
Amad Diallo (£5m) should also be a consideration. Although utilised in wing-back role by the new manager, Diallo seems to be thriving in his new position – having registered three assists in his previous two Gameweeks, amounting to an impressive 19 points in FPL.
For Challengers who want to invest in a Manchester United forward, then there are two viable options to choose between, Rasmus Højlund (£6.9m) and Joshua Zirkzee (£6.6m). However, knowing who is going to start between them, if any at all, can only be answered by the team line-up prior to the match. This is because both players have started one match each under the new manager. So, awaiting the Manchester United line-up could be crucial.
More Goalkeeper Picks
Several goalkeepers catch the eye this week. One of them is Robert Sanchez (£4.7m). Chelsea clash with promoted side Southampton this week. The Saints rank amongst the worst sides in the league for several key attacking metrics, so we could well see the Spaniard bag keep a clean sheet.
Meanwhile, a home fixture against Wolves, could be a good opportunity for Everton’s Jordan Pickford (£4.9m). The Toffees kept back-to-back clean sheets in Gameweek 11 and 12, showing glimpses of their impressive 2023/24 defensive form.
Aston Villa’ Emiliano Martinez (£5m) v Brentford (if fit) and Wolves’ Jose Sa (£4.3m) are two other picks we could consider.
More Defender Picks
Picking out defenders could be quite difficult this week. This is largely based on how disappointing most of them have been this campaign, and clean sheet potential in general this week.
However, Chelsea’ visit to Southampton, as mentioned above, could offer some hope. Amongst the Chelsea defenders, no player has played more minutes (1168) than Levi Colwill (£4.5m).
Joining Colwill, is Rayan Ait Nouri (£4.8m). Wolves may rank as the worst side in the league for total goals conceded so far this season. But, their upcoming opposition, Everton, failed to score a single goal between Gameweek 10-13. As well as clean sheet potential, Ait-Nouri has already produced three goals and an assist this campaign, which is a clear indication he also offers attacking threat.
Finding a cheap defender to enable a potentially expensive midfield is tough. But, you could settle on Ezri Konsa (£4.4m). A home match against Brentford could see Unai Emery’s men keep a clean sheet, and Konsa is the cheapest route into their defence.
Tottenham clash with Bournemouth this week, which could see full-back Pedro Porro (£5.6m) continue to deliver offensively. As well as picking up an assist against Ipswich in Gameweek 11 and scoring against Manchester City in Gameweek 12, Porro also ranks first in his position for total attempts on goal this season (20).
Other defenders we should consider include Ipswich full-back Leif Davis (£4.5m) v Crystal Palace, Manchester City’ Rico Lewis (£4.8m) for his clash with Nottingham Forest, and Liverpool’ Trent Alexander-Arnold (£6.9m) for his match against Newcastle.
More Midfielder Picks
In midfield it could be very difficult to look past Chelsea talisman and penalty taker Cole Palmer (£11m). The Saints have shipped a huge three goals in just less than half of their matches this season, indicating they could be one of the best teams to target. Palmer goes into the game off the back of producing eight goals and six assists already.
Budget gem and Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers (£5.3m) hosts Brentford this week. His price point plays a huge role in his addition to these picks. But, Brentford have also shipped more shots on target than any other side in the league (84), which could mean potential for Rogers.
Newcastle’ defensive inconsistencies are a concern, but they also provide an opening for the relentless Mohamed Salah (£13.2m). Nine double-digit hauls already this season, makes the Egyptian the most explosive asset in the game, and a continued standout captaincy option.
It may be counterintuitive backing Bukayo Saka (£10.3m). But, it may also be hard to resist his excellent form. As we know, Arsenal have a home clash with Manchester United this week, and Saka goes into the match having clocked up a mammoth three goals and five assists in his last three matches in all competitions.
There are plenty of alternative options this week however – Crystal Palace set piece taker Eberechi Eze (£6.6m) clashes with newly promoted Ipswich and West Ham’ Jarrod Bowen (£7.4m) comes head-to-head with promoted side Leicester.
More Forward Picks
Although disappointing in his latest match against Southampton, Joao Pedro (£5.7m) is very cheap and takes penalties for his side. We also have to remember, that the Brazilian managed back-to-back double-digit hauls between Gameweek 12-13.
There are other forwards you seriously contemplating. Following on with our trend of prioritising Chelsea assets ahead of their plum fixture against Southampton, Nicolas Jackson (£8.1m). At the time of writing, Jackson has amassed just two attacking returns less than teammate Cole Palmer this season, which is reflective of how effective he has been. Jackson also impressively ranks amongst the top four players in the entire game for non-penalty expected goal involvement, which suggests his output so far isn’t luck.
Although short of form recently, Ollie Watkins (£9m) could be another consideration. No side in the league have conceded more shots on target than his upcoming opponent, Brentford, as mentioned already. Taking that into account, Watkins could have huge potential this week.
Manchester City’ Erling Haaland (£15m) v Nottingham Forest, and Everton’ Matheus Cunha (£7m) v Everton could also be great options.
@FPLReaction Team Reveal
- Bringing in and captaining Salah was crucial this week. It’s important to mention this first because his inclusion has a huge knock on effect elsewhere.
- Another player I felt was essential this week is Cole Palmer. He goes into his match against a poor Southampton in top form.
- I think the Manchester United double up in defence is fine. It covers me just in case they do keep a clean sheet against Arsenal. I also expect Onana to rack up some save points.
- Owning both Rashford and Fernandes is also a shoo-in for me this week. Originally, under the previous manager, I would have avoided their attackers. However, Amorim seems to have got them firing offensively.
- The addition of Colwill, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rogers and Pedro, all take up a spot because they enable the midfield.
- Other options I like include Nicolas Jackson, Jarrod Bowen and Eberechi Eze.
Gameweek 13 Challenge Review
- Last week I ended up on 74 points. This gave me a round rank of around 102k. My finall overal rank after that round is 6k. So, I basically stayed at the same rank as what I ended the previous round with.
- Kelleher and Salah captain were obviously massive boosts this week. Joao Pedro, Haaland and Rico Lewis were all disappointing.
- I could have been a bit more aggressive last week. If I had based my team on Liverpool winning, then I probably would have gained more rank.
- Overall, I’m happy I avoided Haaland for captaincy. If I didn’t, that probably would have been hugely damaging to my rank.
- It was a good week, and in the round ahead, I plan to enter the top 5k overall!
- Good luck this week!
