Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 3 Top Picks
The new season of German League football continues so we take a look at the Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 3 top picks. Bundesliga Fantasy expert and regular contributor @FPLGunnersaurus reveals three of the best defenders, midfielders and forwards for the third round.
The Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 3 top picks can be extremely useful for managers. With lots of changes to the game this season it could be difficult to adjust for managers. But the following top picks can help you bring clarity to some of the decisions you have to make ahead of the deadline.
Defenders – David Raum (15m / 7% TSB / RBL)
Outside of the Leverkusen duo of Grimaldo and Frimpong it’s German international left-back Raum who looks like the go to premium defensive option this matchday. Leipzig start a favourable fixture run now up until the next international break when they host Union Berlin.
On MD1 Raum picked up an impressive 314pts without even an attacking return to his name when his side beat Bochum 1-0. Whilst his scoring for attack and build-up play was lower than expected half of those 314pts were for won duels, so just imagine what he could return on a day he’s more potent down the left wing.
Mitchell Weiser (13m / 9% TSB / SVW)
Someone who regularly features in these articles is this man. Weiser begun his 24-25 Bundesliga campaign with a bang picking up a brace of assists in a 2-2 away draw at Augsburg. From a fantasy perspective that translated into whopping 437pts matchday return for his owners.
Bremen dominated this match-up last season winning both games by a total score line of 5-0. Mainz are a better side this season so I am expecting a close game but if anything that should bode well for Weiser picking up points for defence and duels on top of any potential attacking returns.
Anrie Chase (1m / 15% TSB / VFB)
Given that Stuttgart have a injury crisis in central defence at the moment it looks like Chase will partner Chabot one more time at least until one of Rouault or Zagadou is back. Chase returned well from a fantasy point of view despite his side conceding three to Mainz on MD2. Chase scored 167pts and when you’re paying 1m for a player you’ll take that any day of the week.
Given the number of premium players all with plum fixtures this matchday managers may wish to make a small sacrifice in their team by selecting Chase as a starting defender away at Gladbach to allow for those big hitters elsewhere.
- Alternatives – Frimpong (18m / 14% TSB / B04) / Leite (9m / 4% TSB / FCU) / Kübler (7m / 10% TSB / SCF).
Midfielders – Florian Wirtz (20m / 31% TSB / B04).
For most fantasy assets it’s too early to say whether they’ll be returning big scores consistently throughout the season. For Wirtz however he’s already looking like a complete must have midfielder. The two games he has featured in so far has demonstrated that he’ll return big when he scores (as with his brace in a 383pts score against Gladbach) and also when he doesn’t (as with his 406pts haul, albeit with an assist, in the Leipzig loss).
It’s clear as day that Wirtz is Die Werkself’s focal point and most good things will involve him. Players like Musiala may go missing from time to time but I don’t think Wirtz carries that risk.
Vincenzo Grifo (12m / 5% TSB / SCF)
This pick is down to the fixture run that Freiburg have until the next break which features four winnable fixtures in which vice-captain Grifo should do well in. The Breisgau-Brasilianer host Bochum in MD3, travel to Heidenheim on MD4, host St. Pauli on MD5 and then travel to Bremen on MD6.
At 12m Grifo is the lowest he has been valued in years and can be someone who comes into your squad and leave for the next month. In the MD1 home win over Stuttgart Grifo returned an assist and 262pts in the fantasy game which equated to 21.8pts per million. An alternative Freiburg asset would be his Japanese colleague Ritsu Dōan coming in cheaper at 10m albeit without the set-piece threat.
Pascal Groß (11m / 12% TSB / BVB)
Die Schwarzgelben feature in the Friday night fixture on MD3 when they host Heidenheim. Managers should look to target at least one Dortmund asset for this game and for me that’s one half of their central midfield pairing Pascal Groß.
Gittens at 10m is also a great option however spending 1m more allows you a player who takes a lot of Dortmund’s set pieces. MD2 was a weak showing for most Dortmund assets but if we take MD1 and Dortmund’s home win over Frankfurt Groß returned 272pts which included an assist, 11m for Groß is a grossly unfair valuation on him but one managers can profit from on MD3 against ‘easier on paper’ opposition than their previous home affair.
- Alternatives – Simons (17m / 18% TSB / RBL) / Olise (16m / 9% TSB / FCB) / Dōan (10m / 2% TSB / SCF).
Forwards – Serge Gnabry (13m / 4% TSB / FCB)
Avoid owning Harry Kane at your own peril in a game against newly promoted Kiel where he could put up a monster fantasy score (note: I will 100% own Kane). That said however for a whole 7m less you could get Gnabry who is the third best performing forward in Bundesliga Fantasy so far.
Gnabry currently sits 91pts ahead of the England captain with one goal and one assist and whilst Kane has been on international duty Gnabry will be well rested having not been called up for the national side. Fantasy managers will preferably want at least two Bayern attackers in the MD3 game and saving money by going for Gnabry over Kane will open up opportunities elsewhere in your squad. With that he takes his place amongst my Bundesliga Fantasy Matchday 3 Top Picks.
Tim Kleindienst (12m / 6% TSB / BMG)
Kleindienst turned 29 on MD2 and what a birthday it was for him picking up a goal and assist in a 2-0 away win at Bochum. That’s now two goals in two games for him and for those who have watched or seen highlights of the Gladbach games he’s unfortunate not to have more.
The Foals host Stuttgart on MD3 who will be kicking off their UCL campaign away to Real Madrid in midweek. With perhaps one eye on that fixture could Gladbach capitalise here? Stuttgart’s defence is currently shot having conceded three in each of their opening two games. Stuttgart need to get points on the board but at home I feel that Gladbach and Kleindienst could stop those plans in their tracks.
Jonathan Burkardt (10m / 2% TSB / M05)
Burkardt got off the mark on MD2 picking up his first league goal in that chaotic 3-3 away draw against Stuttgart. After returning from a serious injury last season Burkardt has showed signs of his best which had originally earned him a call up to the national team many moons ago.
In 2024 he has been on fire scoring 10 times already this calendar year. Mainz host Bremen who have never really been known for their defensive steel. In the form Burkardt has been displaying he’s a fantastic option as a second striker or a third striker if playing with three up front.
- Alternatives – Kane (20m / 35% TSB / FCB) / Beier (12m / 5% TSB / BVB) / Kramarić (10m / 17% TSB / TSG).
