Jarell Quansah

FPL seems to have blessed us with £4.5m defenders this season and we begin this article with potentially the standout of the bunch for the first round.

Liverpool were far from their best last season defensively but they maintained some of the best underlying metrics in the league – ranking amongst the top three teams for goals conceded and attempts on goal conceded.

Newly promoted Ipswich lay ahead in the first round, a side Liverpool would expect to keep a clean sheet against. The cheapest route into the backline could well be centre-back Jarell Quansah (£4.5m). Quansah has started all four of Liverpool’ pre-season matches which could be a sign that new manager Arne Slot will start him in Gameweek 1.

Jacob Murphy

Newcastle could be another fantastic team to invest in this week. The Magpies weren’t convincing last season defensively but offensively they were one of the best – ranking above every other side in the league for big chances total.

One of the biggest factors when considering the Newcastle attack this week is the fact they face off against newly promoted side Southampton at home, a venue they are historically stronger at from a performance perspective.

Whilst most opt for Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon some looking for a cheaper option could go for Jacob Murphy (£5.5m). As well as featuring heavily during pre-season the midfielder banked an impressive four goals and one assist, suggesting he has both form and minutes on his side.

Morgan Rogers

The midfield bracket also seems to be rich in options and Aston Villa catch the eye for that reason. After finishing fourth overall in the Premier League last season Unai Emery seems to have instilled a lot of confidence, confidence they take into their opening match against West Ham in Gameweek 1.

Whilst Ollie Watkins remains the best option he also costs £9m, but a much way into the Aston Villa attack could be midfielder Morgan Rogers (£5m). Rogers has started five of six pre-season matches for his side and produced three goals.

Oscar Bobb

Chelsea in Gameweek 1 is a tough first test for the 23/24 Premier League Champions but not one they haven’t overcome. The Blues have shipped 10 goals in their last four games against Manchester City which highlights how defensively vulnerable they could be.

Amongst the four goals Manchester City netted against Chelsea during pre-season was Oscar Bobb (£5m). As well as scoring against Chelsea Bobb also bagged three assists and a goal in the three matches prior to that. If that wasn’t enough to secure a start against Chelsea in the first round then the assist he registered against Manchester United in the Community Shield should be.

Valentín Barco

Brighton may not be the most reliable team defensively but they have historically maintained some fantastic underlying defensive metrics over the years. The Seagulls also come up against an Everton side who scored the second least goals last season.

£4m defenders are scarce in the game when you rule out the promoted sides but Valentín Barco could be an exception. The injury to Pervis Estupinan seems to have opened up a slot at full-back and based on his pre-season minutes Barco could fill that gap.
