Best FPL goalkeepers to start 2024/25

Last modified date

Looking at both the price list and early fixtures, we’ve picked out the best goalkeepers to begin 2024/25’s FPL season.

Every squad has to include two of them and, at the time of writing, there are a total of 61 listed on the game’s website. All priced between £4.0m and £5.5m.

A couple of this season’s rule changes are relevant to them. Firstly, any stoppers who score a goal will get 10 points rather than six. Yet they’ll get receive fewer bonus points system (BPS) amounts when saving a penalty, also losing some each time they concede. Therefore, goalkeepers are less likely to end with FPL bonuses.

BEST FPL GOALKEEPERS

£5.5m – David Raya

Four have been given this highest price, including two from Man City. With Ederson infamous for rarely grabbing save points and things uncertain for Alisson after the Jurgen Klopp era, declaring David Raya as the leading £5.5m ‘keeper seems straightforward.

The highest-scoring stopper of 2022/23 and second-best for 2023/24 will this time begin cheaper than Arsenal defenders Ben White (£6.5m), William Saliba (£6.0m) and Gabriel (£6.0m).

So if a Riccardo Calafiori arrival adds slight doubt to the latter’s security and Saliba generally lacks goal threat, maybe Raya is the smart way into the Gunners’ superb backline.

Plus, with his transfer from Brentford made permanent, he’s now eligible for all 38 matches.

£5.0m – Jordan Pickford

Meanwhile, six currently have a £5.0m price tag. Fulham’s Bernd Leno had a very good campaign, with the third-most points in this position (133). But – like Nick Pope and Emiliano Martinez – a promising early fixture run can be covered by cheaper team-mates in defence.

Whereas Jordan Pickford ended as last season’s outstanding FPL goalkeeper for points (153), double-digit scores (four) and bonus points (22).

Everton didn’t keep their first clean sheet until Gameweek 8 but went on to record 13, the joint-second most. This included four consecutive December matches and a late run of five from seven.

Not only that, the Toffees are top of Fantasy Football Scout’s ticker for the first 12 Gameweeks.

£4.5M – Mark Flekken and Dean Henderson

This will be the main price that managers are aiming for, having seen £4.5m assets top the most recent couple of campaigns. However, we need real-life managers to start making definitive comments on who their number-one goalkeeper will be.

For example, Chelsea have great fixtures from Gameweek 2 onwards but have Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic and Kepa Arrizabalaga on their books, also being linked with buying another.

It could be Dean Henderson for Crystal Palace but now-fit Sam Johnstone is lurking. Rejuvenated with six wins and four clean sheets from last season’s final seven outings, it’d be handy if Oliver Glasner publicly committed to one.

Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest open against Bournemouth, Southampton and Wolves and surprisingly allowed the third-fewest big chances of last season (74). Furthermore, their expected goals conceded (xGC, 53.88) ranked fifth-best. It’ll either be Matz Sels or new summer signing Carlos Miguel.

At Brentford, Mark Flekken came fifth for points (119) and was one of two stoppers to register an assist. But they have to visit Liverpool, Man City and Spurs in the first five fixtures.

£4.0M – Various

Unless a head coach starts to prefer a budget option, as we saw with Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) last time, this is an incredibly tough selection. You’re essentially trying to predict an injury to a side’s leading name, or picking a less-owned cheapie who hopefully won’t drop in price later on.

One tactic is to pick both goalkeepers from the same club, where one likely steps in whenever his team-mate is unavailable.

Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Leicester and Wolves seemingly have their number twos at £4.0m. This promotes Hakon Valdimarsson, Joao Virginia, Steven Benda, Jakub Stolarczyk and Daniel Bentley ownership. It could’ve been Lukasz Fabianski too but West Ham have signed Wes Foderingham (£4.5m).

Ideally, such double-ups occur for teams with few appealing outfield assets, as there’s still a maximum of three players per club that needs adhering to.
