Maximilian Mittelstädt

Germany come into the competition as one of the tournament favourites. The hosts have been hit and miss defensively recently which is concerning. But with matches against Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland ahead, it could give them the potential to start picking up clean sheets.

The cheapest route into the Germany backline is Maximilian Mittelstädt (€4m). He impressed massively for Bundesliga club Stuttgart last season, which eventually warranted his inclusion in their plans ahead. Mittelstädt also has attacking threat, having netted twice and registered four assists in the same campaign.

Ádám Lang

Staying in the same Group we head over to Hungary. Hungary have been on a uphill trajectory for some years now and the results reinforce this. They also have a fair Group which makes their assets extremely attractive.

One player who has helped Hungary keep three clean sheets in their last four matches is Ádám Lang (€4m). Lang may not be a house hold name but for country he has impressed, contributing a goal and an assist in his last four matches for country. He also maintained a 5.8 ball recovery rate per match during the Qualifiers which adds to his overall appeal.

Wout Faes

Belgium may not have met their ‘Golden Age’ potential but they go into any tournament as a force to be reckoned with these days. Their Qualifying round was a good example of how much quality they still have after finishing first, scoring 22 goals and conceding just four goals.

Five clean sheets in eight Qualifiers should be convincing enough from a defensive perspective and if not then their three clean sheets in the last four matches should be. The cheapest way to take advantage of that in a Group against Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania is with Wout Faes (€4m).

Faes isn’t just the cheapest of his defensive teammates but he is also the most attacking – he ranked top for non-penalty expected goal involvement during the Qualifiers. Six ball recoveries on average per game in the Qualifiers also means he has another route to points.

Taking all of the above into account, Faes cements his position amongst the best defenders in EURO 2024 Fantasy.

Nicușor Bancu

Romania had a very strong Qualifying campaign – topping the Group ahead of Switzerland, but more importantly conceding just five goals. Defensively very good in the Group Romania kept a brilliant six clean sheets in same period. Two clean sheets in their last two matches are also good examples of that same solidarity at the back.

They have several cheap options at the back but the best of the bunch is clearly Nicușor Bancu (€4m). Bancu produced two goals and nine assists for club last season showing how attacking he can be. What was even more impressive is that in his recent Nations League campaign he scored one and registered three assists in just five matches.

Andrea Cambiaso

Italy have always had that historically tough defence to break down rhetoric. Although they managed just three clean sheets in their recent Qualifiers they also kept three clean sheets in their last four matches, which could be an indication going into the tournament.

One player we should all keep an eye on is Andrea Cambiaso (€4m) who impressed for Serie A club Juventus last season. Although a bit-part player, Cambiaso could well play at right wing-back, a system heavily used by the Italy national side in the past. If he can cement his position there, then he could become one of the most wanted defenders in the game.
