Of last week’s listed names, Erling Haaland quickly removed himself with a brace against Everton. It took a while to breach the Toffees’ defence but, once it happened, many captaincy picks were justified.
Dominic Solanke grabbed an assist during Bournemouth’s defeat at Fulham but, despite five attempts and an xG of 0.72, wasn’t able to score. And, after early-season success, Moussa Diaby‘s second successive benching pushed him down to now being the fourth-best Aston Villa midfielder.
Meanwhile, three remain for Gameweek 25. This is published before Raheem Sterling plays in the Monday night match at Crystal Palace, where he’s hoping to end his goalless streak. None have arrived since Gameweek 13.
Then again, it’s been longer for Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin. His 13-match run without netting stretches back to Gameweek 10. The league’s biggest xG underachiever (-5.85), he is next at home to Crystal Palace.
Finally, Diaby’s team-mate John McGinn blanked in the defeat to Man United but matched his season-best totals for attempts (four) and shots on target (two). It was actually his outing with the most penalty area touches (eight), suggesting that a goal is imminent.
