The best captain in Gameweek 28

We find the best captain in Gameweek 28. With the help of the Fantasy Football Scout members area we can use the season ticker and underlying stats to find the best captaincy option for the Gameweek ahead.

Captaincy is one of the most important decisions a manager can make in fantasy football. Writing up a shortlist of options can be helpful but picking out the best captain in Gameweek 28 can be even more important for FPL managers.

Fixture ticker

Below you can see teams near the top with the easier fixtures, going all the way down the table to teams with the tougher fixtures. The season ticker can be very helpful. However, won’t always give us the full story on which players make the best captaincy options.

Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa sit first on the fixture ticker this week. Aston Villa as a team have become more convincing since the new manager took over. Offensively, in the last six matches amongst all teams in the league they rank joint fifth best for goals scored (nine), but amongst the worst seven teams for data like shots in the box and shots on target. At home they also rank around mid-table for most of the key offensive data points.

They face Bournemouth at home in Gameweek 28. The Cherries have failed to maintain a good level of defensive stability this season. In their last six matches amongst all teams they rank the worst for shots in the box conceded (77), shots on target conceded (36) and the second worst for headed attempts conceded (18).

Ollie Watkins (£7.4m) has managed nine goals and four assists from 25 matches this season. More recently in his last six matches he has picked up five returns, including a double-digit haul. This season amongst all players when playing at home Watkins has accumulated a non penalty expected goal involvement of 5.70. Watkins also ranks 11th for the same data point in the last six Gameweeks home and away.

Harry Kane

Tottenham sit third on the fixture ticker in the round ahead. In their last six games amongst all teams in the league rank in the best seven teams for goals scored (nine), attempts on goal (83) and shots on target (29), other key data points are around average. Away from home this season they are strong. Amongst all teams who played at home this season Tottenham rank fourth for goals (29), fifth for shots in the box (208) and joint second for shots on target (83).

Southampton lay ahead for Tottenham who in the same six match period rank around mid-table for many of the key defensive data points. Interestingly at home, where they face Tottenham, they are poor. Amongst all teams when playing at home this season they rank the worst for goals conceded (21).

Harry Kane has produced a massive 20 goals and two assists in 27 games so far in the Premier League. More recently he has managed four returns in his last six Gameweeks including a double-digit haul. This season amongst all players in the league when playing away from home Kane ranks seventh for non penalty goal involvement (5.64). In the last six Gameweeks home and away he ranks 19th (2.67).

Bukayo Saka

Arsenal rank fourth on the fixture ticker in Gameweeks 28. Offensively in the last six matches they rank first for goals (17), first for attempts on goal (139) and first for shots on target (38). They are playing at home this week where amongst all teams they rank joint second best for goals (34), first for attempts on goal (257), the best for shots in the box (173) and first for shots on target (84).

Crystal Palace lay ahead for Arsenal who in the last six amongst all teams rank the second worst team for shots on target conceded (31) and around mid-table for other key offensive data points. When compared to every other team playing away from home this season they also rank around mid-table for most of the data points.

Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) has accumulated 10 goals and nine assists from 27 matches in the league so far. More recently he has also picked up three returns in his last six matches including one double-digit haul. This season amongst all players in the league when playing at home Saka ranks fifth for non penalty expected goal involvement (7.58). In the last six Gameweeks he ranks 12th amongst all players for the same data point (3.09).

Conclusion

Ollie Watkins may be a good option but relying on an inconsistent team and player for captaincy could be risky, even with good recent form and a poor opponent. Harry Kane is a fantastic option and has been relentless in his consistency this season.

However, Arsenal are very strong at home maintaining some elite offensive stats. Saka also edges Kane’s non penalty expected data when comparing the formers home matches this season to Kane’s away matches this campaign. There isn’t much between Saka and Kane but the home game for Saka just edges it.
