Underachievers GW35: Which players are due an FPL goal?

Using recent underlying stats from the Fantasy Football Scout, we assess which players are due an FPL goal.

Recent FPL goals

Some forwards are in great form over their last four matches:

7 GOALS – Cristiano Ronaldo

5 GOALS – Gabriel Jesus

4 GOALS – Son Heung-min

3 GOALS – Bruno Guimaraes, Richarlison, Jack Harrison, Timo Werner

However, others are shooting and getting in the right places without having either luck or end product.

So let’s look at the players who have recorded at least nine shots, an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.00 and an expected goal involvement (xGI) of 1.20 over their last four matches, yet no more than one goal.

Due an FPL goal

As only one of last week’s names scored at the weekend – Bukayo Saka – the list is now up to 14 players. Using data from Fantasy Football Scout’s Members Area, here are this week’s underachievers.

What immediately catches the eye is that a defender has made this list. Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso is so attacking, that his one game from four games is actually deemed to be underachieving, as he has had 13 goal attempts – 11 of which inside the box. By setting up nine chances, he is also one of the best creators here.

Brentford duo Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo are low on goals right now, although their team has only lost one of seven matches. If Double Gameweeks were on their radar – which they aren’t – FPL managers would surely be targeting these two.

Aston Villa also appears twice, via Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings. Their form is different to Brentford’s, as a run of four successive defeats was halted by a dull 0-0 draw at Leicester. However, expect Villa transfers to pick up this week ahead of Norwich and consecutive Double Gameweeks.

Yet Burnley surprisingly has three players on this list, as they have learnt that they have to score goals to stay up. In fact, only five teams have had more shots in their last four matches than the Clarets. Jay Rodriguez offers a cheap forward differential option, whilst midfielder Maxwel Cornet leads this list for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI).

There’s even an appearance from Wout Weghorst. Just as owners had given up all hope on this FPL flop, Weghorst has made himself an option again. In fact, he totals more goal attempts in his last three matches than all of the previous seven combined.

Finally, James Maddison‘s returns may have dried up over the last few appearances but he’s not totally out of the attacking action. It’s just that he’s reverted to creation from out wide.
