Starting at the top of the rankings and working my way down as usual, I wanted to share my thoughts on 2B this coming season. You better get one of the top 9 guys! After Uggla, everything is uggla! Sure a few of these guys listed after that “could” have big season, but with little more than a dream of solid production, I suggest building your fantasy team from the inside out and starting with one of the top second basemen early in your draft. I would feel real safe drafting Utley, Kinsler, or Phillips, aside from injuries, you pretty much know what you are going to get and that is priceless at the 2B position. I ranked Ben Zobrist as my fourth because I think he is likely to continue his solid HR rate, I know he entered last year as a utility guy, but it looks like the Rays are committed to him after trading Iwamura in the off season. He won’t finish with that high average, but he should reward those that have faith in him and he may be a nice value on draft day as people shy away expecting a big decline. Speeking of big decline, Dustin Pedroia may actually have a bit better draft value as well now that he has come back to earth after that tremendous 08’ season. Rumors of a switch to SS seem to have legs in Boston and that would really make him an interesting fantasy player this season. Brian Roberts is always over rated and my main factor for ranking him this low is because you just never know what you are going to get. He could steal you 30 bases, but will he? Aaron Hill is the last of the second basemen I would want as my starter, the nice thing about him is that he does often slip in drafts and allow you to grab him as your “fill in”; if you went against my earlier advice. However I would much rather have him as a utility infielder than a starting 2B. Howie Kendrick, hmm what can you make of this guy? Potential for a huge season still lives within’ him, but will he find it in 2010, I say don’t hold your breath. Ricky Weeks started out the 09’ season like he was a man who had finally figured things out and developed some great power, which is priceless at second base. However, the injury may set him back for yet another season as he tries to regain strength. Martin Prado looks to be the guy taking over in Atlanta with the trade of Johnson, he won’t be flashy and won’t steal many bases, but he can hit and should have a solid average and runs scored. Trust me when I say this, Polanco is Oldo, I think he lost the edge last season and a slap hitting second basemen with a declining average and little to no speed is not something I like to draft in the latter rounds for my fantasy team. Where he is being drafted you should be grabbing guys with up-side. Up-side like Clint Barmes; who could hit 30 HR’s this season, but I’m not even sure his own team believes everything they saw last season; so I surely won’t count on it, but he has just about the most up-side as anyone at 2B.
